“Empowerment”
Written by Sue Sanders
April 8, 2017
Spring bouquets graced each table as guests gathered for the event. Women and men enjoyed a lovely and delicious breakfast. The fellowship was like a diffuser spreading joy, graciousness, love and expectancy. Worship began with our singing about our longing for the joy of the Lord to come down. We told Him how much we needed Him: “Jesus, I need You every moment I need You. Hear now this grace bought heart sing out Your praise forever.” We remembered His love, His mercy, and His loving kindness that has never failed us. The praise team led us to sing, “Cornerstone,” remembering that our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness, that Christ alone is our cornerstone, and that He is Lord, Lord of all. We rejoiced that the weak are made strong in the Savior’s love and that through the storm He is Lord, Lord of all.
Joyce introduced Dr. Peter Wyns, and he shared thoughts about his recent trip to Israel. Joyce Sanders, Ramelle Coker, and Devon Coker went with his group in February. Sheila Solomon, Dalana Barnett and her husband went to Israel with the 2016 group. Dr. Wyns encouraged us to contemplate taking the trip with his group next year. He invited each one to visit the book table. He has written a book a year for the last twelve years.
Dr. Wyns began his message by encouraging us to get ready for a powerful year. Although there is so much chaos and anger in our nation, God is ultimately still in control. Hebrews 12:26 declares that there will be a great shaking: “When God spoke from Mount Sinai his voice shook the earth, but now he makes another promise: ‘Once again I will shake not only the earth but the heavens also.’”(NLT) God is going to rattle everything. Only things of the Kingdom will remain. The Kingdom is the only thing that is unshakeable. USA needs a big shakeup. Each one of us needs to realize that we can bring freedom to our families. If our families are messed up, we need to be the ones to be Heaven openers, ones who bring salvation to our families through Jesus Christ.
EMPOWERMENT is the key. The church today needs a shakeup; it needs reformation. It has been five hundred years since Martin Luther penned a document attacking the Catholic Church’s corrupt practices and nailing it to the door of the church. Ultimately, the ninety-five theses set in motion the Protestant Reformation, and that is significant. We have gone astray. We have been living five hundred years of grace. There will be a new reformation in the USA this year. The USA is a partner with Israel, and something amazing is happening—We are EMPOWERED, activated. In the typical church 20 percent of the church does 80 percent of the work of the ministry. Only 20 percent of a congregation is really active and attends church regularly. This is not the New Testament model. In the Old Testament priests did a large portion of the ministry. A small group of prophets performed signs and miracles when the Spirit moved upon them. When Jesus began His ministry, He began to do more. He cast out demons with a word. People declared that even the demons responded to Him. He performed so many miracles within a five mile radius. Jesus told His disciples that He, the Son of Man, must suffer many things, be rejected and be killed. When Peter rebuked Jesus, Jesus rebuked Peter telling him, “Get behind me, Satan!”
After Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, He spent forty days with His disciples teaching them. He told them to wait for the power of the Father, the Holy Spirit, and the gift of the New Covenant. When the Holy Spirit comes, He makes us powerful. The year 2017 is the year of EMPOWERMENT in the Holy Spirit. There will be a shakeup in the church. Our culture is so corrupt, and it will take the EMPOWERMENT of the Holy Spirit to draw the next generation from their foundations. There is a shakeup coming, and God will win the day. Holy Spirit churches have programs, but more is coming, something new. The exciting thing is that we will not see the 20/100 model, but instead congregations on fire with 80 percent moving under the power of the Holy Spirit and operating in their different gifts. The elders will not only handle the boardroom duties, but they will be empowered to minister in seven specific ways: a. Worship b. Intercession c. Casting out demons d. Preaching and teaching the Word of God e. Help with disputes f. Work for establishing sound doctrine g. Missions.
Dr. Wyns explained that in his church 45 percent of his congregation are serving faithfully. He has approximately 325 attending, and 150 workers. He said, “Imagine if 80 percent of our church members were inflamed with the Holy Spirit. Each one of us is one of a kind with special gifts. Each one needs to get in and start doing something. Suddenly something is going to happen. Things will begin to reverse in the church. Instead of being just spectators, Christians will become ministers. It will look similar to the filling of the 120 after Pentecost. Dr. Wyns shared about a conference in northern Canada with Indian tribes. Tribe leaders were astounded when Dr. Wyns began to pray over individual leaders in their native language.
Joel 2:28 declares: “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.” In 2017 prophesying will not be limited to a few, but the empowered will prophesy. In Acts the church grew to around 20,000 believers. Almost all of them were Jews who acknowledged Jesus as Messiah and were filled with the Holy Spirit. The devil is scared of us being empowered with Holy Spirit. Persecution led to the spreading of the Christians to other lands and the expansion of the church to 50,000 believers.
Over a period of time the church became so organized and a few were doing the work of the ministry. That is not the New Testament model. We need organization in our churches; however, perhaps if we saw the focus shift to the work of the ministry, more would be accomplished for God’s kingdom. Astounding things happened in Acts fulfilling Jesus’ words that His disciples would do greater works. There were extraordinary miracles, and people were coming to Jesus by the thousands.
The New Testament Christians witnessed the fulfillment of Jeremiah 31: 31: “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” We will begin to see the windows of Heaven opened over our homes. We will dream dreams and have visitations from angels to bring healing and revivals to families, churches, communities, and our nation. We can expect personal visitations similar to the one Paul had on the Damascus Road. The angel will most likely come in our dreams.
People will volunteer freely in the day of EMPOWERMENT. We need to get ready for big revivals. There are two things we need. The first is spiritual authority when we pray and prophesy. The second is Anointing. Heaven will give us the release and impartation of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of the Lord is upon you. This is the year of God’s favor. We are ministers of Jesus Christ.
Dr. Wyns instructed us to be humble and to believe, and then led us in prayer.
The praise team declared the wonder of that wonderful and beautiful name of Jesus. Dr. Wyns spoke God’s destiny and release to each one of us and then prayed individually over each and every one who remained
