From the time David killed Goliath, he was constantly in danger of his life because of Saul’s jealousy. David had no peace because Saul was constantly seeking to kill him. David’s faith remained strong, but finally he tired of “this deadly game of hide and seek in and out of the cities and strongholds of Israel” (Phillips 257). In desperation David fled to Gath to seek asylum with Achish, one of the Philistine lords. Surely, here Saul could not reach him. His plan backfired as soon as his identity was known. David pretended to be mad, and the disgusted Achish released him and flung him out of the land. David returned to the famous cave of Adullam. There he picked up his harp and sang the words of Psalm 34.
David refocused his mind, rewired it so that he would praise the Lord no matter what happened. As David thought about God’s kindness to him, he played back a reel of how God delivered him over and over and over again from Saul. Consolation revived his dejected mind, and he could sing: “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (King James Bible, Psalm 34:1). “What an effective antidote to the poison of doubt, depression, and despair” (Phillips 258)!
I, too, can play back a reel of when God delivered me over and over and over again. (November 6, 2014)
