In Jeremiah 32:17, Jeremiah affirmed God’s greatness with these words: “Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.” God told Jeremiah that Israel would be taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar, but a remnant would return. He instructed him to buy his uncle’s field before they were taken captives. God affirmed: “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?” (New Jerusalem Bible, Ezek. 1.5-10).
“In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul” (King James Bible, Psalm 94:19). Delight literally means stroke, and so soothe. The Hebrew word is used in Isaiah 66:11 of a mother quieting her child with the breast, and in Jeremiah 16:7 of the cup of consolation given to mourners at funerals. My thoughts so typically are anxious and tormenting ones filling me with fear and focusing on the worst case scenario. How exciting to know that in the midst of these disturbing, perplexing thoughts God’s comforts delight my soul. God’s promises remind me of His faithfulness. The Holy Spirit provides solace; His soothing brings delight and internal comfort.
