Our brain is fascinating. We control the thoughts that run through our minds. No matter what situations we find ourselves in, ultimately we have the freedom to decide what our minds will dwell on. Lord, help me “set my mind to look for the presence and goodness of God in my life, the riving of living water flowing out of my belly” (Ortberg 98).
Brother Lawrence, a cook in a monastery, focused his mind constantly on God even as he peeled potatoes and prepared the meals. How do I constantly bring my mind back to dwell on God, His goodness, His plans for my life, His instructions? I set Him before me each day asking Him to lead me in the right paths and help me not to stray to the right or the left. The more attention I give the Spirit the more He controls and directs my life. John Ortberg refers to it as HSN, the Holy Spirit Network. We can tune into this channel at any time and ask the Holy Spirit to guide and direct our thoughts.
Years ago, my Uncle Earl worked out a unique technique to connect with the different ballgames during football season. He had the cabinet radio on one radio station, the portable radio on another station, and the one in his car on yet another. He was constantly walking back and forth to keep up with the various games. His attention could not be focused on just one but was divided. That happens to me as my thoughts run helter and skelter through my mind—random thoughts often full of fear or judging or indecision.
Lord, help me focus on Your network. Quiet the other voices and help me to discern Your voice.
